Welcome to Curt’s Corner! Let’s talk about heirloom seeds. When I first started at Odiorne Feeds in the early 1980’s, I can still remember the vegetable seed display rack we had. Lone Star Seed was the company, and little did I know their seeds were almost entirely heirloom garden seed. I didn’t know what heirloom seed was at the time; all that was important was that the customers bought them. Everyone had their particular favorites, and would share how delicious the vegetables were. There was even the occasional friendly disagreement between our customers about which variety was the best.
What are heirloom seeds?
What is an heirloom seed? Most simply put, it is a seed directly from a plant that has been passed on through the generations. These seeds hold value amongst gardeners due to the dependability, and just as important, the flavor. The taste of vegetables produced from these seeds is becoming the most valuable trait amongst home gardeners who seek out heirloom seeds, instead of quantity.
My personal favorites:
Through the years, I have found some of my personal favorite heirloom varieties. In my opinion, nothing beats Clemson Spineless Okra in a gumbo, or mashed Yellow Straight Neck Squash (a great substitute for mashed potatoes!). Whether it’s beans, okra, squash, carrots, or black-eyed peas, Odiorne Feed and Ranch Supply has heirloom seeds for you. And of course we always carry plenty of fertilizers, soil, compost, tools, and everything else for your gardening needs.
Give us your feedback!
The next time you come into the store, share your feedback on what does well in your garden and why. Did your carrots have the best flavor you’ve had? Did you try an heirloom lettuce that we don’t carry? I welcome your comments and feedback so that we can continue to provide the best variety and quality of seeds for you. Thanks, and happy gardening!
